And now some lyrics from my favorite new rap label OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All)
“Boogyin with jesus and a bunch of nazi hoes in the front row at a holy Justin Beiber show, slowly my ritalin starts kickin’ in and Jesus left hand starts making me feel like a kid again”. -Tyler the Creator “Splatter”
“Hey girl what’s your name, do you wanna suck a dick? Who am I? Wolf Haley, yeah I’m known for punching bitches in the fucking brain, do you wanna gimmie some? No you don’t? Why you won’t? Oh your a fucking nun. Didn’t mean to offend, oh your a lesbian, so I’m guessing you don’t really like to put your trust in men. Who do I trust? um, heroine addicts and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles..yeah I can count on them” -Tyler the Creator ft. Casey Veggies “DTA”
“Cruising in my go-kart at Walmart selling cupckaes, go ahead admit it faggot, this shit is tighter than butt rape that involve ballpark franks and some silver duct tape, pornos and hormones and boxes of Digiorno, you homos is loco, you probably drinking cuervo with same vatos with the door closed watching zorro, you homos”-Tyler the Creator “French”
Not exactly your typical rap lyrics, but Tyler the Creator (the de facto leader of OFWGKTA) is anything but typical. In fact, OFWGKTA prides themselves on being the most disturbingly unique label to enter the rap game in ages. What’s even more disturbing is how successful they have become. They were awarded the “best new act” at last years MTV music awards; a tribute to a group that talks about rape, misogyny, murder, dismemberment, pedophilia, torture, drug addiction and homophobia the same way you and I would talk about the weather. But what does the the twenty year old Tyler Okonma from Los Angeles and his merry band of misfits (Mellowhype, Casey Veggies, Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, Mike G, Frank Ocean who is probably the second most famous member, The Jet Age of Tomorrow, and The Internet) know about any of these topics? NOTHING! In fact the worst offense on record by any member of OFWGKTA is vandalism (Earl Sweatshirt was also reportedly sent to an all boys boarding school in Samoa due to drug issues and depression). Yet their lyrics seem to appeal to the Jeffy Dahmer in us all. Essentially, the “We don’t give a fuck about what we say” attitude of Odd Future combined with their act as the black David Bowie’s of the modern era have become such a hot ticket that their even selling out concerts in Australia (where they are currently touring). Backlash? This is what hip-hop philosopher D. Request thinks of Odd Future:
Is Odd Future “a hip-hop children’s show that we will all grow out of” or are they changing the rap game with lyrics so disturbing and powerful that they can be compared to classic Emenim? It is hard to tell considering Odd Future is still very young; but they are certainly doing something right considering the enormous following they have already generated. One of the biggest criticisms against Odd Future is their immaturity, as exhibited in many of their silly yet enjoyable youtube films:
Well you can call Tyler immature, but know that he is not only the main rapper for Odd Future, he is also the producer of all their albums, directs all their music videos, designs all their album artwork and merchandise, and is in charge of all web based media including building the OFWGKTA website, and me and Tyler are the same age! Tyler has won “best rookie” and “must follow artist” at the 2011 MTV2 sucker free awards, best new artist at the MTV music awards, and has been nominated for “best web-born artist”, “video of the year” (Yonkers), and odd future was nominated for “best crew of 2011”. Tyler has three albums (Bastard, Goblin, and Wolf…set to release this year), has appeared on Jimmy Fallon and Comedy Central’s “Workaholics”. That’s pretty damn impressive for ANYBODY at the age of 20.
I love OFWGKTA and I have been listening to nothing but them for about a week now. In fact, after I downloaded their entire discography off Frostwire, my Ipod now has over 300 OFWGKTA songs and each one is as enjoyable as the next. And I don’t just listen to Tyler, I listen to all of them because they are all talented rappers (my second favorite being Casey Veggies). Sure their lyrics are jaw-droppingly disturbing, but it’s better than listening to Drake talk about “being on one” or Rick Ross saying “I got a chopper in the trunk”. In today’s rap game the only way to stand out is to break down barriers and be as unique as possible and OFWGKTA are pioneers in that respect. I feel like now more than ever there is a lack of creativity in this country. Hollywood is churning out remake after remake and sequel after sequel and every song on the radio is a song you have already heard 20 times. Sure “Watch the Throne” was a good album, but at the end of the day what is the difference between Jay-Z, Kanye, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Drake, and any of those other mainstream rappers? You could sit in a room for days on end listening to their music and eventually it will all sound the same. Then you can put on an Odd Future song and realize that somebody in the rap game still has some originality. That is why Odd Future has found an audience today; because the rap industry sucks. If I may quote one of my favorite movies; Se7en: “To get people’s attention today, you can’t just tap them on the shoulder, you have to hit them with a sledgehammer”. That is what Odd Future has done; hit the music industry with a sledgehammer. Yes it will be a bloody, messy, and disturbing sight to see, but all revolutions are.
